Winthrop and Eliot emerged at the top of a well-scrambled intramural baseball league as a result of yesterday's competition on sun-baked Soldiers Field, Following up their 6 to 5 victory against Leverett last Friday, the Puritans forged ahead with a 5 to 3 score over Dunster in the morning, but were tied for the lead once again in the afternoon when Adams failed to show up for its game with the Elephants.
Harcourt Wood went all the way for Winthrop, yielding two runs in the fifth inning and one in the eight. Dunster's relief hurler, George Okamura, nearly succeeded in salvaging his cause with a two-run homer in the fifth, but the puritans' early lead proved sufficient for their victory.
The day's best performance, however, was turned in by Bucky Harrison, who pitched Kirkland to a 9 to 2 win over Dudley. The chunky hurlor doled out one hit and chalked up 10 strikeouts. Gerry Glynn led the Deacons at the plate with a triple, double, and single in four trips.
Dunster atoned for its morning loss by pounding out a 20 to 4 softball throttler over Leverett yesterday afternoon, while Winthrop was beating Lowell, 9 to 2.
