Jay M. Hurley, Jr. '44 of Leverett House and Boston, Mass., will captain the Varsity lacrosse team in its quest for the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse League championship and the Briggs trophy that goes with it. He was elected by balloting yesterday afternoon.
A seasoned attackman, Hurley garnered his experience while competing for Exeter and later for the 1942 and 1943 Crimson teams. His career was then interrupted by war service until this season.
While Hurley and his Varsity mates rest this afternoon in preparation for the league opener with Dartmouth one week hence, it will be a battle of youth versus experience on the Business School field as the Freshmen entertain a favored Boston Lacrosse Club "B" team. This is the season's opener for the undermanned '50 aggregation which can still use some new recruits.
Smokey Mortensen, Freshman coach, will start the following lineup: Chamberlin, g; Ripley, pt; MacDonald, c.pt; D. Carswell, ld.; Zeigler, 2d.; Birdsall, c.; Claflin, 2a.; Kortepeter, 1a.; Aibel, o.h.; Davison, i.h.
