NEW HAVEN, March 9--Maintaining a continual attack that produced scores in every period, Yale's title-bound hockey team captured Big Three honors by downing Harvard 4 to 2 in the Arena Saturday night.
It was Fred Pearson, performing in his final Blue-Crimson battle, who injected a bit of the spectacular into what was otherwise a somewhat colorless 60 minutes, by connecting for two quick tallies in the space of one minute in the middle of the second period.
(By virtue of this victory, Yale ties Dartmouth for Pentagonal League leadership, necessitating a playoff tomorrow at the Boston Arena. The winner will face either McGill or the University of Toronto, Canadian League leader, for the International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey title.,)
Hamien Leads Jayvees
The Jayvee contest saw the Cantabs put on a seven-goal third period scoring parade that was sufficient to clinch a 13 to 3 triumph. Bill Hamlen, with four goals and two assists, and George McLaughlin, with two goals and three assists, sparked the winners who were never in danger.
With no less than 20 penalties being meted out, Yale's Freshman hockey team defeated Harvard 5 to 2 in a hard-fought battle. The Cantab's Larry Ward knotted the count at two all on an unassisted dash at 0:48 of the third period before the winners suddenly caught fire.
Six-Man Offense Falls
The Crimson Varsity, trailing 3 to 0, bounced back at 17:32 of the second period when Johnny Crocker blasted in a rebound of a shot by Dave Farrell that caromed off Terry Van Ingen's stick. Yale finished off their scoring at 3:06 of the third when Antie Mohern coverted one with the collaboration of Gardy Ritz and Jack Soper, but with three Yale men playing back, Tom Moseley broke through to score unassisted on a rebound at 17:11.
Cotty Davison went off on a checking penalty at 18:00, and Coach Johnny Chase opened all-stops--pulling out goalie Bill Yetman and sending six men into the attack, but the Yale defenders managed to turn back the thrusts.
The Cantabs, with Crocker showing the way, gave warning of a repetition of last Saturday's hair-breadth affair when they pressed Van Ingen and forced him into seven saves during the early minutes.
