Liberal Union Votes to Join S.D.A. Forces

In a crowded session at Leverett House last night, the HLU voted to affiliate with Students for Democratic Action, elected three men to its executive committee, and decided to form a group to protect the rights of labor.

The meeting got under way at 7:30 o'clock with the election of three members at large, Dave Kligler '47, Edwin C. Jordan '50, and David H. Heer '50.

Main issue of the evening arose with the executive committee's resolution to affiliate with the SDA, student counterpart of the Americans for Democratic Action. The membership voted a cloture of 45 minutes for open discussion of the question.

Center on Communists

Argument centered on the ADA platform excluding Communists from its membership. Speakers against the motion asserted that joining the SDA would alienate many of the liberals who felt their strength lay in the united front, thus isolating the HLU from the main current of liberal action.

Members endorsing the motion insisted that the issue was not whether the HLU was "red-baiting," but how it could get better results from united action. A speaker cited the destruction of the American Student Union when it was taken over by the Communists in 1941, concluding that the Reds were a non-assimilable group.

Last item on the agenda was a speech by Don S. Willner '47, chairman of the Political Action Committee, who called for the formation of an inter-collegiate committee to defeat the anti-labor bills now pending in Congress.
