Dartmouth Hammers Sextet 15 to 4, Dunks Swimmers, Topples On Mats

Smashing their own record for the 440 yard freestyle relay and with it the undefeated record of Hal Ulen's swimmers last night, Dartmouth's five yard edge in this final event was enough to overtake the Varsity 40 to 35.

Palliation for the defeat came earlier in the evening, however, as the Yardlings, led by breast stroker Larry Ward whose 2:45.2 for 200 yards tops the former 1937 Yale meet high of Nathan Lemke, inundated the Green 47 to 28.

Coach Hal Ulen, going into the story-telling relay with a slight two point margin, got blood with the last pound of push out of all his men, but particularly Walt Bullard. This hardworking freestyler took first in the 220, second to Dick Hartung in the 100, and swam a creditable second leg of the ill fated relay.

Green Gets Jump

The Northern invaders of the Indoor Athletic Building pool jumped to an early five point lead by taking the medley, but the Crimson bounced back into the lead as Walt Bullard and Jerry Gorman took first and second in the 220-yard freestyle.

Recoil with a vengeance came in the 50 yard sprint, an ominous portent for the final relay outcome. The Green's Howe with first, and Thalheimer taking third, sandwiched Bill MacVicker who made it a wirephoto finish largely on the strength of his turns.

Seesawing continued when the final tallies of the dive showed Bob Aaron and Tom Drohan superior to Hanover springboard entries, and the Crimson setting the pace 22 to 19.

Heavy gun Dick Hartung, whom Green Coach Karl Michael kept veiled in his last two meets, was pushed but not taken by Walt Bullard in the 100, and Dana Jackson and Hank Todd pushed Dartmouth into the lead again in the 150-yard backstroke.

With breast stroker Chuck Hoelzer definitely in the runner up spot in the last lap of the 200-yard breast stroke, all eyes were on Walt Lagarenne, battling successfully for third against the dogged Hawley.

Taking the cue, Jerry Gorman and Forbes Norris led the one Green entrant in the 440-yard freestyle to put the Crimson out in front for the last time
