Athletic Director Bill Bingham yesterday confirmed what has been rumored for the past six months when he announced that the 1948 outdoor IC4A track and field championships will be held here. The meet is scheduled for May 28 and 29 in the Stadium.
Bingham added that "it is almost a certainty that the IC4A meet will be designated as a regional tryout for the Olympic Trials." He based his assertion on a telephone conversation yesterday with Asa Bushnell, Secretary of the United States Olympic Committee.
May Supplement NCAA, NAAU
Under the current setup, the NCAA and NAAU championships stand as qualifying meets for the Trials, but Bingham hinted that they would undoubtedly be supplemented--perhaps by the Big Nine, Pacific Coast, and IC4A meets.
In 1936, when Bingham chaired the United States Committee, four semi-final meets were held. Six men in each field event reached the Olympic Trials but in the running events there were as many as 18 qualifiers. That plan is expected to be followed in next July's Olympic Trials at Minneapolis.
USC Possible Entry
Before the war, IC4A meets generally rotated between the Stadium and Penn's Franklin Field. The IC4A embraces colleges on the Eastern Seaboard as far south as the Carolinas and westward to Pittsburgh, although there are some non-sectional members. Strongest of these are Michigan State and the University of Southern California, which hasn't come east for the past few meets.
NYU won last year's 44-college meet at Franklin Field. Michigan State was second and the Crimson and Penn State tied for third. Varsity javelin thrower Don Thimble won his event and will be back on the firing line this spring. Trimble, along with weightman Sam Felton, loom as definite Olympic possibilities.
