To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
I think the food at Harvard is good, in Eliot House where I live if not always at the Union. I have never found much to gripe at considering we pay only $11.50 per week board. In fact, I have always secretly thought that Harvard did pretty well to feed us for that in the face of high prices.
Last weekend, however, I stayed in Trumbull College, Yale, and ate several meals there. We enjoyed rare roast beef that was tender and tasty, milk in individual paper bottles, and choice of dessert, including crackers and fancy cheese. This, I learned, is the usual quality of the fare of Yale men who even see an occasional lamb chop. The amazing thing is they pay only $10 per week for this delicious repast.
One way they are able to provide more for less is by limiting seconds on fancy dishes, milk, and desserts. This sacrifice, however, was more than made up for by the home-cooked quality of the substantial amount we did get. I also noticed that there was considerably less waste under this system.
This is not a serious protest against the Harvard food situation. I would doubtless have been well-satisfied with our fare and prices if I hadn't seen what Yale offers. What I do mean to say is, if Yale can do so well, we ought to be able to too. William Davenport '50
