Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Again in full swing after the hour exam hiatus, the Student Council's Service Fund drive last night reported that it has collected $13,000 in cash and an additional $5900 in pledges.
Under the overall generalship of Charles H. Sammond, Jr. '48, a three-pronged campaign has been organized to hit all members of the College in an attempt to reach the Council's ultimate goal of $25,000. The Houses, the Yard, and the commuters will be three centers of effort, each division of the drive under the leadership of a separate chairman.
Topping the other two branches of the drive in returns thus far is the House campaign, which by last night had collected a total of $7613. Individual House leader was Eliot, with Lowell and Kirkland following in that order. Sammond holds the reins over House collections.
The Yard campaign, now under the command of Robert Knox '51, has already poured $3283 into the Council's coffers. Here Thayer Hall is leading the dormitory pack, closely followed by Grays and Holworthy.
Bringing up the rear, at least in the total amount of money collected, is the drive through the mails to reach commuting students. From them, a three-man committee under the leadership of Robert J. Maier '48 has gathered in $1972.
One of the few charitable organizations still carrying on an independent fund-raising campaign, the Cambridge Tuberculosis Commission will have Christmas Seals in the mails to students in a few weeks. The Commission prefers the publicity the Seals produce to obtaining its funds solely through the Council drive.
