The Rutgers University football eleven that will face Harvard's gridiron machine at Soldiers Field today will be composed of just about the same performers who overturned the Crimson in a 13 to 0 upset last Fall at this time.
Outstanding in the New Jersey School's lineup is quarterback Frank Burns, passing star who is being boomed for All-Eastern recognition. Burns has been the spearhead in a Scarlet offensive game that has swept to four straight victories following an opening-day loss to Columbia.
Five Victories
Western Reserve of Ohio, Princeton, Fordham and Lehigh are recent Rutgers victims. The Scarlet had an easy time in each of these contests but the Princeton clash, which was won only by a 13 to 7 count.
Burns, a third-year student at Rutgers, completed six of eight passes--two for touchdowns--in his last appearance to boost his aerial gains for five games to a sizzling 484 yards. He tossed two touchdown passes to end Bucky Hatchett, another dangerous man on the offense, to increase his season's total of scoring aerials to six.
Proves while Filling in
Hatchett, sophomore wingman who missed last season because of an injury, has developed into a first-string operative after excelling in a substitute role for the injured Jack Garrabrant.
Other big guns in the Rutgers attack besides Burns and Hatchett include backs Herm Hering, Harvey Grimsley, Irwin Winkelried and John Sabo.
Hering is Coach Harman's regular left halfback and was the team's high scorer last season with 80 points. He is leading Scarlet touchdown-makers to date with 82 points, and turning in a good running performance from his slot in the Rutgers "T".
Grimsley is definitely a man to watch in the impending tussle. A slow starter in 1946, Grimsley caught fire against the Crimson last year and danced through the Crimson defenses for both tallies. The halfback flash has had another disappointing start on his current campaign, but he turned in a top-flight exhibition against Lehigh on Saturday and may shine for the Scarlet against their New England foes once more.
Averages First Down per Two Tries
Irwin Winkelried has won Grimsley's regular right halfback post. A hard, rugged plunger and a fine defensive player, the sophomore back is one of the most consistent performers in the Scarlet lineup and sports a 5.4 average in yards gained rushing.
Sabo is considered by Harman as one of his most valuable finds of the year. The hard-driving fullback is the loading ground-gainer on the Rutgers crew and has amassed a total of 804 yards earned on the turf for an average of 8.3 yards gained per attempt.
