Exams, Disabilities Pose Rutgers Game Problem

Harlow Trying Out Mazzone, Fiorentino For Center Position

By Robert W. Morgan jr.

"This will be a week of coaching by remote control," said Dick Harlow yesterday as hour exams began taking their toll of Varsity football players, and five regulars turned up for afternoon practice.

Injuries are still haunting the team as it goes into its tuneup week for a vastly underrated Rutgers squad. Jim Kenary and Howie Houston will not be ready. John Gorzcynski, who seems to have come up with a Dartmouth injury during the weekend, is a highly questionable starter. Chester Pierce and Nick Rodis, however, are virtually certain to play, though possibly not in starting roles.

Center a Problem

Don Stohe's exclusion for what amounts to the rest of the season gives Harlow a very real problem at center. The coach said yesterday that he considers breaking in an inexperienced man at this position out of the question. "I can't use Rodis there," he added, "with the team so weak in tackles."

Two local boys, Stretch Mazzone and John Fiorentino, both ends with high school experience at center, are being groomed to replace the injured Stone. According to Harlow, one of these men will start Saturday and the other will return to end.

Mazzone attended nearby Everett High School. Fiorentino also hails from Everett, but is an alumnus of Boston College High.

Probable Rutgers Lineup

As to next weekend's probable starting lineup, the coach did more speculating yesterday. Dean Markham seems a likely prospect at one tackle, with Gorzcynski at the other. If Big John cannot play, Harlow may alternate Rodis and Doug Bradlee.

Jim Feinberg's superb play at guard drew a "finest game since Chub Peabody" rating from the coach and a strong bid to start Saturday. Emil Drvaric was also impressive against Dartmouth. These two guards together may have prevented a third touchdown for the Indians.

The reduced Varsity squad was forced by the extended injuries to cut out contact work yesterday and run through plays and signal drills. Frank Miklos, alternating at quarterback last fall, was promoted from the Jayvees yesterday to add depth in that position. Kenny O'Donnell, present first-string quarterback, was a 60-minute man against Dartmouth.

Former Captain Present

Witnessing the workout was Bob Green, Varsity end from 1936 to 1938 and Crimson captain in his Senior year. As a member of the '37 team, which Harlow rates as one of his most successful, Green enjoyed the distinction of beating Yale and Clint Frank.

He graduated from the Divinity School in 1943, joined the Air Corps during the war, and now serves as an Episcopalian minister in his own church in Worcester. Although he says his work prevents him from seeing much football, he hopes to witness the Princeton game here two weekends hence.
