Eli, Green, Court Triumphs Leave Crimson in Ivy Cellar

Two startling upsets in Ivy League basketball games Saturday night have placed the idle Varsity quintet in the cozy isolation of the league's cellar. Yale, after suffering four consecutive lesses, came off the floor to defeat Cornell, 39 to 36, while Dartmouth, a two-time honor, won the first league victory over Pennsylvania.

Victories by these Eastern Catacomb dwellers over the two teams previously selected as co-favorites for the title, left the Crimson five the only team in the circuit still without a victory, while Columbia and Princeton, each with two triumphs and no losses, vaulted into first place berths.

Loss of Gale Aids Blues

The low-scoring game at New Haven, which saw the Elis reverse a previous 21-point defeat at the hands of the Big Red, was an indication of the important role played by Bob Gale on the Ithaca squad. Gale, larger of the two brothers on the Cornell squad, suffered a broken knee-cap against Harvard last weekend, and will be out of action for about four weeks. For the Ellis, center Tony Lavelli sparked his club's attack.

Dartmouth came to life on its home court against the Pennsylvanians, and won a 72 to 56 decision with the aid of Ed Leed's 26-point splurge. Center Aud Brindly and Captain chip Coleman also helped the Big Green cause, while Jack Coleberg and Chink Crossin hit double figures for the Quakers.

Earlier last week, Columbia won its second successive Ivy contest at Yale's expense. Princeton's ten-point triumph over the Crimson was the only other league game played.
