W. Penn Tuttle, Jr. '40, captain of the undefeated 1939 cross country team, died last weekend while mountain climbing in the high Sierras near Visalia, California.
Tuttle, son of William P. Tuttle, served as an ensign in the Navy and planned to attend the University of California this fall.
His body was found by a forest ranger on Monday. While camping in Sequoia National Park last Saturday with his brother and a friend, Tuttle and the friend decided to climb separate peaks. Tuttle failed to return.
