Twenty-nine students, largely members of the Liberal Union, met last night in Phillips Brooks House to debate the program and the committee reports of the American delegation to the International Union of Students, scheduled to meet in Prague, Czechoslovakia, starting August 17.
Proposals were aimed at formulating recommendations and expressions of opinion characteristic of the University body, to be forwarded to S. Douglass Cater, Jr. '46, representative of the University and New England at the forthcoming meeting, who will use them as a guide in future discussions.
Committee reports were summarized and presented in turn to the group for discussion. The following proposals were approved by vote and will be sent to Cater:
1. On the Commission on International Understanding: That the IUS go beyond the clearing house level and actually publicize ideas for the exchange of students and reconstruction work.
2. On the Commission on Economic Security: That the IUS support the ILO and WFTU; and that an agency be set up to disseminate information on the coming conference to all nations of the world.
3. On the Commission on Academic Freedom: That the IUS strike at specific prejudices which misrepresent and hinder academic freedom, and avoid sweeping statements.
4. On the Commission on Colonials and Imperialism: That the IUS (1) Ask the U. S. to remove troops from China; and (2) That troops (a) should be withdrawn from countries where they are being held for political purposes, and (b) should refrain from political activity in countries where they are being held for other reasons.
