Stahlmen Pound Brown 4-1, Will Face Holy Cross Today

Never in trouble after the first inning when he gave up three walks that cost him the Bear's lone run. Johnny Knowles pitched the Varsity baseball team to a 4 to 1 victory over Brown University Thursday at Providence. This afternoon, the Crimson will seek a third consecutive win as will Joe Phelan when he takes the mound against Holy Cross in Worcester.

Knowles allowed the Bruins only two hits, and, although surrendering eight bases on balls, he spaced them out over the six innings that were played before rain took over so that Brown did not threaten except in the first. Collecting three strike outs, he has backed by a team that committed only two errors.

Two of the Varsity's four tallies were chalked up in the first inning. Don Swegan topped a pitch, sending it bouncing down the third base line, and beat out the pitcher's throw. He stole second and, after Pete Petrillo had bee walked, made third base when Bob Brownell, Bruin shortstop who was credited with four errors for the contest, fumbled Bill Fitz' grounder.

This left the bases full. Nick Rodis took a base on balls, forcing Swegan home for the first Crimson run, and then Petrillo scampered in on a fielder's choice knocked out by Mel Allen's bat. Fitz scored in the third inning and Swegan again in the fifth.
