Cambridge quietly celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of its incorporation Sunday, postponing the fanfare until the week of July 4. Plans include a historical pageant to be held at Soldiers Field and the dedication of a plaque commemorating Washington's assumption of the Continental Army command and a monument honoring veterans of World War II.
The town meeting form of government was abandoned in 1846 because Cambridge, no longer a tiny University town, had become a bustling community of 12,000. Set up as the fifth incorporated city in Massachusetts, Cambridge today boasts a population of over 110,000.
