Playing the first of a sixteen game schedule, the Freshman basketball team romped to an easy victory over the shorter, less experienced M.I.T. Jayvees 74 to 44 on the Indoor Athletic building court Saturday night.
Paced by John Rockwell, the Yardling quintet scored in the first minute of play and never relinquished the lead as they built up a 35 to 20 advantage at half-time.
Rockwell, former Wabash, Indiana star, and captain of this year's five, racked up 31 points with 15 field goals and one foul. Dick Covey, Frank Lionette, and Chusk Brynteson also hit double figures with ten markers apiece. Pat Dailey, six foot four inch center, was one tally behind with nine points to his credit.
Height was the great advantage enjoyed by the victors. With Lionette and Rockwell only an inch shorter than Daily, and Covey at six even, the Freshmen controlled the backboards. Several times Rockwell was still able to tap the ball in after failing on the first few attempts. Covey used a one-handed shot to score three times from beyond the foul line.
Coach Warroll Berg '44 expressed satisfaction at the outcome although he thought the foul shooting of his men left much to be desired. The Yardlings made only two out of eight from the free throw line. He refused to make any predictions on the remainder of the season, however, preferring to wait until after the encounter with Exeter next Saturday night.
