Governali Passes Highlight Varsity Practice Session

Boston Yanks' Ace Works Out In Crimson Defensive Drill; Drvaric Plays in Scrimmage

By Irvin M. Horowitz

A gentleman named Paul Governali, who throws forward passes for a living under the aegis of the Boston Yanks pro-sessional football team, made things interesting at Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon, as the Varsity team's preparations for its appointment at Palmer Stadium Saturday continued at high gear.

Since the Tigers boast an excellent asser in Carl Leibert, Coach Dick Harrow and his assistants devised the notion of inviting the former Columbia ace to participate in the Crimson's pass defense Drill.

Pass Defense Improves

The result was some of the finest shucking the Harvard practice field has been in cons. Governali, rated as one of the best passers in Pro football ranks, had an excellent day, and some of his long heaves were superlative. The fact that the Varsity defenders were able to break up a goodly percentage of the losses speaks well for their chances against Mr. Leibert's aerial efforts on Saturday.

"I though Harvard's pass was very good," Governali said after the practice session. "There were only three passes of all I threw today where receivers weren't well covered." The Yank see also praised the downfield blocking displayed by the Varsity in the contact session.

Another item of note was the appearance of Emil Drvaric, the first string guard who was yet to see action for the Varsity, in the day's scrimmage. Drvaric ran with the "A" team in its defensive practice, and participated in the contact session for about half an hour. It now seems likely that Drvaric will make his long-awaited debut on Saturday.

The scrimmage itself featured an eleven composed mostly of "A" team performers against a Jayvee squad, in which the work of Chip Gannon and George Hauptfuhrer was noteworthy. Today's practice will feature another scrimmage, and the rest of the men slated to to see duty against the Tigers will go at it.

Henry Injured

Bill Henry, substitute quarterback who scored the Crimson's first touchdown against Tufts, sustained a body injury Saturday which will keep him out of action for about three weeks.

Leo Flynn and Jim Feinberg, who were sidelined for the Tufts contest because of injuries, are both expected to be available against the Tigers, but Ned Dewey is not likely to be ready for another week. Mal Allen, starting tackle in the Jumbo contest, is not yet ready for contact work, and Howie Houston has been working in his left tackle post this week. Houston may start against the Orange and Black.

Participants in yesterday's scrimmage included: le, Hauptfunrer; it, Houston; lg, Drennan; c, J. Fisher; rg, Drvaric and S. Smith; rt, Davis; re, Cummings; qb, Goethals; rhb, Gannon, lhb, Petrillo; fullback, Cowen
