Unity was the outcome of last night's climax to a long running battle between the opposing forces on the Council constitutional issue. Shelving mutual suspicions, Council members and men from the summer investigating body agreed to begin work immediately on a new constitution as members of the new Council committee.
With the common aim expressed by Council head Levin H. Campbell, 3rd, '48, in mind--"to provide the College with a democratic and representative Student Council"--the two groups at last achieved a meeting of minds. Raymond J. Considine '48, head of the investigating revisionists, and Edric A. Weld '46, chairman of the new Council constitution committee, shared the chair for the evening.
Full Agreement Reached
"We have reached full agreement," said Considine after the meeting, "as to the procedure to be taken, the composition of the committee, and the positive guarantees of full publicity for all possible proposals. We are now one group."
The guarantees to which Considine referred had been secured by an evening of collective bargaining between the two groups. Fearful of having their suggestions discarded or overruled once they dissolved themselves and accepted posts as individuals in the Council committee, the members of the revisionist body queried Weld continuously to ensure an equal status in the new Council group.
Students Solve Major Problems
Resulting agreements included one banning majority and minority reports by the committee. Instead, any major disagreement will be submitted directly to the student body for solution, with no indication of the numbers on the committee favoring or opposing either side.
In addition, it was agreed to provide all members of the new committee with copies of the present constitution and of the draft prepared by the summer investigators, and to discuss both of them, article by article, as the work progresses.
First meeting of the new committee will take place Thursday afternoon at 4:30. Members of the Council will include Weld, Henry Lee '48, Roger S. Kuhn '46, and Frank T. LeBart '46. Joseph H. Sharlitt '45 will represent the CRIMSON, Richard G. Axt '46, AVC, Gordon W. Hedin '46, Phillips Brooks House, and probably William H. Bozman '46 the HLU, although that appointment has not yet officially been announced. There will also be representatives from Winthrop House and Dudley Hall, all other Houses being represented by men already on the committee.
Quick work on the problem was forecast by the committee-members, who will work with a Campbell-set goal of six weeks. "This problem is one of the most important before the College during the coming year," said Weld, "and I hope for immediate action.
