CRIMSON NINE BEATEN, 7-0; FOOTBALL STARTS MONDAY

Coast Guard Hands Stableman First Loss

Coach Flyod Stahl's Crimson nine finally lost a ball game, but it took a powerful Boston Coast Guard outfit, studded with former minor leaguers, to turn the trick, 7 to 0, at soldiers Field last Wednesday.

Oddly enough, the hits were evenly divided at eight apiece, the big difference being that three of the visitors' blows were home-runs. Jack Wallace, Crimson pitching mainstay, didn't exactly find the opposition but at no time was he actually in danger of being knocked off the mound.

In the fourth, after tow Crimson errors had put men on first and, second with none away, Wallace got Friend on an infield hit and a walk had produced a run, he forced Merritt to Chapple with the bases full.

And in the seventh, he set the coast-Guarders down in order. He pitched as Jim Tobin sometimes does, going well for an inning or so and their making a pitch too good.

Actually it didn't make much difference how many fat pitches Wallace served up or how many runs he allowed, because the Crimson was definitely not in a scoring mood. No less than ten, Stahlmen were left stranded on the bases, and promising rallies died in the third, sixth , and seventh innings. Although the Crimson had at least one baserunner in every frame, they just couldn't push their runners around the base-paths to score.

Outstanding in the coast Guard lineup were third baseman Friend, who hit for the circuit twice, shortstop patti, and the battery of Merritt and Harr. For the Crimson, Chapple stood out with two hits and a couple of pretty fielding plays. Crimson right-fielder capaccio got the first hit of the game in the third on a line drive that bounced just inside the left foul line and went for a double. Webby Durant, up from the B-team, had a sharp single to right in three trips.

While the Crimson Varsity was losing to the coast Guard, the B-team was belting out a 7 to 4 win over a team from constitution wharf on the scrub diamond.

Tomorrow the Crimson will attempt to got back on the winning trail when they tangle with Marine nine at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And then, the following Saturday, it will be Harvard vs Holy Cross.
