EVACUEES GET FINAL SUMMER ROOM LISTING

Committee of Four Masters Makes Allocations by Lot

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Evacuation plans were completed last week for the 350 men now living in the Houses which are to be used by the Army and Navy, as a committee composed of the four House Masters issued assignment for rooms in Adams, Dunster, and Lowell.

In order to provide even distribution for the new Freshmen, estimated at less than 400, the allotment of evacuees was governed by lot. In most cases, it was possible to grant the first choice of House, as listed on recently filed room applications. Preferences of price and type of quarters were observed with very few exceptions.

Return July 6

With 227 present residents returning to the three civilian Houses by July 6, and newcomers arriving in the same week, conditions in converted suites are expected to be similar to those prevalent last September. Due to the absence of the Yard Freshmen who took meals in the dining halls at that time, however, eating halls will be considerably less crowded.

The civilians' change from present environments to "duration quarters" will be interesting in many ways, for the seven Houses have, until now, maintained distinct characteristics. Physical distinctions, such as Dunster's proximity to M. I. T., Lowell's seldom heard bells, and Adams' Gold Coast swimming pool, will remain unchanged, but the personnel transition has great possibilities.

Old Order Changeth

Many of the 12 year old traditions will be swept away, however, as disciplined units replace the heterogeneous undergraduate groups of former seasons. Eliot's elaborate and bawdy Elizabethan Christmas productions are not likely to be held as long as V-men replace Elephants, and the Naval ROTC unit, which may occupy Kirkland House, will not be noted for water-throwing accuracy.
