Mike Carruthers and Robin Scully led the Crimson rugby squad with two scores apiece Saturday afternoon at Soldiers Field, as the team shut out a Royal Navy outfit by a 20 to 0 count.
After about ten minutes of scoreless play, a penalty was called on the tars and Carruthers was given the chance to make the game's first score which he accomplished with his free boot. Scully made the first try on a play set up by clever passing on the part of the forwards.
By the end of a slow first half the Crimson ruggers had amassed a 6 to 0 advantage. The second period was faster with the Navy showing a bit more strength. However, Scully still managed to dart around their fullbacks for a successful try. Carruthers missed the conversion, the ball hitting the foot of the upright.
Steve Ausnit made a long run but it was nullified by a penalty against Harvard. The Britishers were coming close but their attempts to score were constantly being thwarted by Ausnit, Fritz Kempner, and Jim Hathaway.
After another penalty against the visitors Carruthers booted home his second penalty shot. Phil Winter and Kempner made the final two tries with Fritz missing one conversion and making the last one. For the sailors, their big fullback, Hobson, was a tower of strength.
