In the largest home concert of the current season, the Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society will harmonize with the newly-formed glee club of the Navy Communications School at 8:15 o'clock tonight at Sanders Theatre.
The Glee Club is still on the score-card while both other Clubs in the "Big Three" League have closed up for the duration. But aside from the fact that there are now only 100 men in the Club instead of the normal 250 of peaceful years, the HGC still does business as usual.
This year G. Wallace Woodworth, conductor of the College's Club, announced a 21-concert schedule which is no more feat in the face of tightening OPA orders on large group transportation. In spite of the gas shortage, the Club can boast of a weekend trip over April 2 that will include concerts at Pembroke, Sarab Lawrence College, plus a visit to Carnegie with Dr. Serge Koussevitsky and his Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Navy Debut
Of course, the most obvious effect of the war on the Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society will be seen tonight when the two old-timers take a new-comer in their midst to sing at their big concert. Irving Fine '37 will introduce the Navy Communications School Glee Club in their debut before a University audience.
In that same debut will be Fine's "Incidental Music to Alice in Wonderland" and Mabel Dentels' "Dum Dianao Vitrea" which have never been sung before in any concert. Likewise the two choruses from "King David" by Houeggar have seen little previous performance.
That "music tames the savage in the human breast" seems to be berne out as the Harvard Glee Club still hits on all forte in spite of the serious actbacks other extra-curricular activities around the College have received from the current war.
