Four Crimson eights will risk Harvard's three-year undefeated crew record tomorrow when the Haines oarsmen get their first test this season in an informal race against M. I. T. over the mile and five-sixteenths Henley distance in the Charles Basin. With the Freshman boat starting the first race at 3:30 o'clock, the J. V.'s, 150's, and Varsity will come up to the line at 30-minute intervals. Navy who was originally scheduled to race tomorrow, cancelled its entries because of transportation difficulties.
Whether the Varsity, paced by Schultz Wood, stroke of last year's J. V. and of the champion Freshman crew of '45, will be able to hold the Tech eight tomorrow is a debatable point. Favored over the Crimson, the Engineers have practically the same boat that gave last year's Varsity such a close battle.
150's Freshmen Favored
But the Crimson is favored to bring home the scarlet and gray crew shirts in at least two of tomorrow's contests. The best conditioned and strongest Harvard crew on the Charles this season, the 150's stroked by Bill Malcolm, last year's 150 stroke, are favorites to beat M. I. T.'s three entrants, while the Freshmen are scheduled to take their race with the Tech third heavies. The J. V. race is practically a toss-up with the Engineers possibly having the edge.
Whether tomorrow's race will ring down the curtain on the second summer crew season will depend on the November weather, Haines said. The Athletic Association announced yesterday that it had recommended to Dean Buck an increase in the crew budget so that Newell could be opened for indoor rowing this winter.
The Freshmen will end their season at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday with a race against a Tech Freshman crew in order to allow the Engineers to get their letters. No crew letters will be awarded at Harvard this fall.
Barges to Race Today
Although there will be no fall race this year Haines held on elimination race yesterday for the ten freshman barges that he has trained this season. The six winners will face each other today at 4:30 o'clock for a three-quarter mile race.
