Officials of the Harvard Phi Beta Kappa Society last night announced the election of 16 new members to the Undergraduate Chapter.
This group, the first to include members of the Class of 1945, consisted of four men in Junior standing (10 to 12 courses completed), seven men in Senior standing (12 or more courses), and an additional group of five members of '44 who have been on leave of absence from the University since February.
The Senior seven are Hugh Calkins '45 of Newton, Army; Peter W. Fay '45, of Cambridge, Army; George W. Kennerly '44, Belmont; Cornelius Lansing '45, Chappaqua, New York, Army Medical Reserve; David R. Matlack '44, Germantown, Pa., NROTC; Irving Rudmand '45, Dorchester, Army Medical Reserve; and Daniel L. Salem '44, Cambridge, Fighting French.
The Senior five, all on leave since last February, are Theodore S. Baer '44, Norwood, Army; James H. Donald '44, Dallas, Texas, Harvard Medical School; Harold C. Fleming '44, Atlanta Army; Thomas H. Green, Jr. '44, Bloomington, III, Harvard Medical School; and Edmund L. Saunders '44, Mattapan, Boston University Medical School.
Concurrently Thomas S. Kuhn 44, First Marshal, announced that another election will be held early next term. "Under the war-time system," he stated, "elections will be held after each term to choose new members from those awarded degrees. One additional meeting in the summer term will be called to elect Junior members and exceptional students on leave of absence."
