BROWN SWIMMERS BOW TO CRIMSON, 51 TO 24

Gossner, Losers' Ace, Takes Both Sprints

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

What was touted as a great Brown swimming team proved to be a man named Carl Gossner last night, and that Bruin Freshman ace could win only two events, so the Crimson mermen drowned the Providence swimmers 51 to 24 at the Indoor Athletic Building pool.

Paced by Captain Bill Drucker, who took one race and clinched another, the Ulenmen took six of the nine events on the program, and the meet was settled before most of the spectators had settled in their seats.

Christman Over Barnes

Harvard triumphed in the 300-yard medley without a ghost of a battle and George Christman edged teammate Dave Barnes in the 220-yard free-style race a moment later. Then Gossner made his first appearance of the evening.

Knifing through the water like a fish, the well-built Pawtucket star, heralded last year as the best scholastic prospect in the nation, nosed out Big John Eusden, who gave his all, in the excellent time of 23.9 seconds. John Watkins was third.

Veteran Bill Hewes, totalling 97.5 points, was the winner in the diving event, with Freshman Bob Aaron taking second. Brown's Ahern was the other entrant.

Gossner Again

Gossner then returned to the limelight, stroking his way to a victory in the 100-yard free-style in 54.0 seconds, with Eusden again pressing the issue. Drucker triumphed in his speciality, the 150-yard backstroke, beating out Brown's highly regarded Bob Wanthouse in the good time of 1:42.5. Don Hartwell was third for the Crimson.

The only other event won by the visitors was the 200-yard breaststroke, in which Bruin John Paulson won over teammate Ray Joyner, with Frank Padgett finishing third.

Dave Barnes reversed the 220 order in the 440 event, besting George Christman by a few strokes in 5:10.4. And the Crimson swimmers, using Perry Stearns, Ozzie Morton, Don Perry, and the aforementioned Eusden, won the 400-yard relay by a country mile. Somebody named Gossner swam the anchor leg for Brown, but he didn't help much.
