VARSITY NINE OPENS SUMMER SEASON AGAINST MOHAWKS

Berg Slated to Hurl Curtain Raiser Tomorrow At Lincoln To Begin Informal Campaign

By J. ROBERT Moskin

Tomorrow afternoon will see the Varsity baseball team open the first summer diamond campaign in Harvard history when it meets the Lincoln Mohawks at 3:30 o'clock in Lincoln. This game will inaugurate an informal but hectic Varsity season which will continue until September 1 with two or three games per week.

The Mohawks are members of the local Twilight League and have already won their first two League contests. Although the Crimson nine has not joined the amateur circuit, tomorrow's meeting has been arranged as part of Lincoln's Fourth of July effort to help the USO. A return match on Soldiers Field may be scheduled in the near future.

Devens First Home Game

Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock the Harvard community will have its first opportunity to see its baseball contingent in action. At that time the Lovell General Hospital team from Fort Devens will come to Cambridge to join the battle with the Crimson. A week later the Varsity will return the compliment.

Also on the summer schedule are a series with Brown and a variety of contests with Army and Navy representatives. Hopes of playing a squad starring Bob Feller were smashed when the ex-Indian hurler was transferred to Cleveland. An invitation to play Dartmouth had to be refused because of transportation difficulties.

The entire effort to plan a summer season has been handicapped by the unavailability of transportation facilities and by the lack of an appropriation from the H. A. A. The former makes it necessary for the opposition to be local teams and for the services to provide trucks if they insist on the Varsity's playing them away. The lack of financial support places the season on an informal basis with equipment being supplied by the individual players and Harvard uniforms being passed out only before each game.

For the first time Freshmen are permitted to try out for the Varsity. At the opening practice Monday a large representation for 1946 worked out. Several of the candidates were so impressive that they may be taken on tomorrow's trip. A separate Freshman squad will be formed under Adolph Samborski which will compete with the Varsity during the week with promotion to the Varsity as the reward for talent.

Although the starting nine for tomorrow has not been definitely named, virtually the entire infield will be intact from last season. In the inner circle only third sacker Gil Whittemore has left, so the likely openers are Ned Fitzgibbons at first, Captain Bart Harvey at second, Thayer Drake at short, and Sophomore Jim Gallagher at the hot corner. Gallagher's appointment is not final but at present he leads all other contenders for the post.

Paul Delahoyde will start behind the plate and Sophomores Hoss Hamlen and Bill Barron are sure to see action. Control specialist Warren Berg will start on the mound with Bill Hoftyzer ready to relieve him. The outfield seems likely to be veteran Bill Barnes in right, and Sophomores Jim Apthorp and Vin Leahy
