NEW PROGRAM COORDINATES ALL STUDENT ARP ACTIVITIES

A reservoir of men, who will be able to serve in the defense of the University in case of air raids, will be built up by a new program coordinating all student ARP effort through the Houses and the Freshman Union Committee.

The new step was taken by the P.B.H.-Student Council Defense Service Committee when Chairman Peter Macgowan '42 appointed E. Bernard Fleischaker '42 as coordinator. In this position his job will be to see that student response to the training programs is expedited and made to conform to the needs of the air raid precincts which the University has established.

Reserve Needed

As the situation now stands, the members of the University staff who have had ARP courses, together with the few trained students, constitute a sufficient force to safeguard the University. But there is need for a reserve to serve as reliefs and also to step into the places of the Seniors who now constitute a large part of the force.

Besides this, the Committee feels that some exposure to ARP methods is valuable for any student in enabling him to be of service to his own community. The action of the Committee has been approved by Dean Chauncey's Office, which supervises the training of students, as well as by Aldrich Durant, the chief warden of the University.

Under the new plan Dean Chauncey will continue to have charge of all training courses. Durant will handle the placing of all personnel where they are needed. The new committee will, through a process of decentralization, see that enough students, especially Sophomores and Freshmen, are trained.

To coordinate the Freshman activities, Fleischaker has appointed Thomas Matters '43. A large number of Yardlings is needed to reinforce the Houses as upperclassmen leave College.

The Houses will cooperate in training upperclassmen. Each House Committee will appoint a defense committee to which all information about defense will.
