WOMEN STILL BARRED FROM LAW SCHOOL

12 Month Plan Continues Despite Drop in Enrollment

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

No women will be admitted to the Law School despite the large decrease in enrollment, according to a statement by Acting Dean Edmund M. Morgan, Royall Professor of Law. He stated that the Law School would continue to function throughout the war on a 12-month basis although the student registration may drop off as much as 75%.

Dean Morgan explained that if the feminine restriction were dropped, an insufficient number of women would enter to warrant the move. Pointing out the large number of law schools which now admit women, he said that they are capable of handling the comparatively small number of lady lawyers-in-training.

No More War Degrees

The plan now in effect of issuing diplomas to men leaving for the army before graduation will be dropped after this year. Dean Morgan said that although college Juniors will still be admitted to the Law School in June and September, this procedure will also be abandoned.

The reason for the early diplomas and the admission of Juniors is that these men, having no foreknowledge of the present situation, have been caught unprepared by the war and will have difficulty in changing their plans. Others, however, will be able to plan ahead and will know their chances of completing graduation requirements, he said.

Lawyers will be at a premium during the war and will be invaluable in the reconstruction period which will follow the war, according to Dean Morgan. If the law schools do not turn out trained men, the shortage will affect the country gravely in a few years, he said.

During the last World War, enrollment at the Columbia Law School dropped off 90 per cent. Although Dean Morgan does not expect such a decrease, he stated that the number of law students has already fallen from the usual figure of 1300 to less than 700 and will probably drop much lower after this last registration and selection.
