Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Lagging far short of its goal, the Harvard Service Fund will not end this week as scheduled, John Richardson, Jr. '48, treasurer of the drive committee, revealed last night. The drive will continue until the minimum or $14,000 is reached.
Although $12,000 to $13,000 has actually been pledged, only a small part of this has been collected. The general confusion caused by hour exams was attributed as the cause of the failure of collectors to complete their work by the deadline originally set for this Friday.
Winthrop Leads
Complete returns were not available last night, but indications were that Winthrop House had surged far into the lead in amounts collected. This was an upset of Leverett, which had remained in the lead since the opening of the drive. Leverett and Lowell were closely contested for second position with Leverett still holding a slight lead.
"Unless the student body fulfills its pledges soon towards the Harvard Service Fund," Richardson stated, "the Fund Committee may not be able to assure that other charities will not canvass the undergraduates."
The original purpose of the drive was to avoid a repetition of past years, when students had complained of being continually canvassed by charities. It was promised when the drive opened, that an immediate response would do away with the necessity for any further drives throughout the year.
