Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Advising any student now he can be of the most use to the national defense effort is the function of the latest bureau set up by the University.
A James Casner, professor of Law, heads the new Defense Advisory Service, which opens today with University 20 as headquarters and KIRkland 7600, Extension 38 as the means for making appointments.
Fille Placement Gap
The Service is designed to fill the gap left by the temporary suspension of the Student Placement Bureau, which, until this year has served as a link between students and employers, with no account on defense.
The man with special aptitudes and training in College who feels that he can be of more use to the country in some specialized position in the Army or in defense industry than toting a rifle through the mud will be able to get help and advice from Professor Casner.
The man with no special training but with a good liberal education can get advice from Professor Casner on how to utilize his abilities if he is drafted.
All Sorts of Information
Information on special branches, on commissions in the army, the navy, and the marines, on V-5 and V-6 as well as V-7 cruises, on the three air corps, and on such possibilities as the meteorology division--all this Professor Casner will have at his finger-tips. If he doesn't he'll get it.
The Bureau will keep in touch with the various defense industries as much as it is able. It will keep track of possibilities in steel mills and airplane factories and of any openings, specialized and otherwise, that may result in deferment as "vital."
It will have on hand ways of staying in College while working towards commissions and ways of gaining commissions after graduation.
Draftees Forget Talents
The University has found, according to Professor Casner, that many men, faced by the questioning officer when being examined at induction, forget any capabilities they may have. The Bureau will be able to prepare them for the questions they will face and to list the courses which they have taken at Harvard, such as languages or sciences, which they might otherwise neglect to mention.
All students who wish to avail themselves of the Service should call Miss Honeij, Professor Casner's secretary for this purpose, on Extension 38, for an appointment.
Appointments can be made for Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday afternoons between the hours of 2 and 5 o'clock.
