Waldstein Whiffs 11; Nine Breaks Jinx, 2-1

Mort Waldstein, Sophomore left-hander, went the route--and then some--as he pitched the Stahlmen to a 2 to 1 victory over a highly toned Boston University nine, breaking a two-year jinx, in the Soldiers Field opener yesterday afternoon.

Waldstein and DeMerritt, ace Terrier hurler, battled it out in a personal twirling duel which went 11 innings before Freddy Keyes finally sauntered in with the winning run following a costly error by Charlie Thomas.

Both pitchers turned in spectacular performances for this early in the season--or for that matter at any time during the season. Displaying a low-breaking curve that had the Bostoners completely fooled, Waldstein racked up a total of 11 strikeouts, while limiting the opposition to four hits. DeMerritt was equally effective against the Crimson batters, allowing only two base knocks and issuing only one walk. Though he struck out only one of the Stahlmen, he never was in serious trouble.

The winning tally came with two out in the eleventh inning. Up first, Waldstein popped to the catcher and Keyes reached first on an error by shortstop Cummings. On an attempted sacrifice bunt, Scully arched the ball into the pitcher's glove, but Keyes promptly stole second.

Bart Harvey followed with a hard-hit bounding ball to right, the second hit of the day off DeMerritt. On the play Keyes rounded third and started for home but slid back to the base in the nick of time. Terrier third-baseman Thomas then rifled the ball back to first to catch Harvey off the bag, but the throw was low and went on through Poltrine. Keyes then scampered home with the winning run.

Ed Buckley scored the other tally for the Stahlmen after a wild Melee around home plat. Buckley was almost caught between third and home after smacking out a clean single to center field, and advancing around the bases on an enemy error. He romped home when the Terrier catcher threw the ball into the dirt.

The only B. U. run was scored on a passed ball after a double by Thomas.
