COACH SIZES UP MATERIAL IN HANDICAP

Track Events Today Close Intra-Mural Competition

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With a warm sun beating down on the Soldiers Field turf, Coach Jaako Mikkola yesterday afternoon officially raised the curtain on the 1941 outdoor track season by running off the filed events of the University Handicaps. This afternoon the Handicaps continue with the track events starting at 2:30 o'clock.

Drawing 40 cindermen, mainly from the Varsity and Freshman squads, to the afternoon's session, Coach Mikkola was able to size up potential track material and commented, "too early to say, but things look hopeful."

Refusing to divulge any distances for fear of giving aid to future rivals, Mikkola nevertheless admitted that Tom White in the hammer, Tom Holyoke in the broad jump, and Johnny Shattuck in the shotput turned in good performances.

This intramural track event offers all cinder aspirants, from Yardlings to graduates, aided by equalizing handicaps based on past records and appearances, to challenge Varsity men. Firsts and seconds were, well scattered among all the classes. Two Freshmen, one Sophomore, two Juniors, one Senior, and one graduate student took firsts.

The summary:
