"Except for the required Freshman athletic program, the great voluntary movement into sports of all kinds can be explained only on the basis of an expression of biological need for exercise together with the natural interests of young men in competition," Dr. Bock said.

"No one as yet has been able to evaluate in detail the place of the athletic program in this or any other university, but one can speculate as to whether the passing of any function of the University would create the gap caused by the absence of such a program."
