Harvard's hospitality to the draftee army will open with a bang next Wednesday, when 100 soldiers from Fort Devens will meet and dance with 75 girls from Leslie, Sargent, and Radcliffe in Brattle Hall.
Although all the House Masters have agreed to open up their domains to draftee guests, the program of putting up soldiers over night will not begin for another two weeks. At that time a second dance will be scheduled and a very restricted number of students will be allowed to put draftees up over night.
Only Ushers From Harvard
A dozen Crimson ushers will help stags and does to mingle on Wednesday night, but aside from them no other Harvard men will be admitted to the dance. The soldiers will be convoyed down in trucks by 8 o'clock and will ride back to Fort Devens at 12 o'clock.
All the House facilities will be open to the guests in uniform, but as yet no ruling has been passed down specifying a reduction in meal rates. Furthermore, no special privileges have been granted so far in the athletic facilities. Entertainment will be provided by an organization under Edward Ames '42, who plans to run dances, athletic contests, and tours of the Yard.
Social service work to help the draftees will get under way next week, when Phillips Brooks House will start recruiting tutors, discussion group leaders, entertainers, speakers, and game-room supervisors for work in army recreational centers.
