Clark University's soccer team came to Harvard for the first time Saturday and went away with a very poor impression of Cambridge hospitality. Jim McDonald sent his Varsity booters out to meet them and sent them home with a 6 to 1 defeat added to their record.
The Freshmen lost to Andover Academy 2 to 1 with Paul Morgan pushing in the lone Harvard tally. After the game, the Yardlings elected Doug Thompson captain. Like Varsity captain Jack Penson, Thompson guards the goal nets. Last year he played goalie for Exeter Academy.
Clark's Fifth In Row
The Varsity game marked the fifth straight defeat for Clark this season. In each encounter they have managed to score one goal. Harvard did not break any record on the offense with their six tallies as Brown has already beaten Clark 12-1.
Harvard scored in every period, while their opponents were only able to break through in the final quarter. Early in the battle, center forward Buzz Sawhill tallied for the first time. In the final chapter he closed the book with the sixth goal.
In the second period, Thayer Drake, at inside, scored on a pass from halfback Mort Myerson. Before the whistle for the intermission, "Herky" Herskovits scored from his right wing position. Early in the second half "Herky" took a head from left outside Danny Poor and slapped it between the uprights; then, in the last period, Eli Berman scored the fifth marker.
The Harvard lineup: Penson, g; Harbison, rfb; Taylor, lfb; Calhoun and Slingerland, rhb; Clarke and Myerson, chb; Mallory, rhb; Herskovits, ro; Drake, ri; Sawhill and Vorhaus, cf; Gifford and Dixon, li; Staber, Poor, and Berman.
