Jenkins, Hyde Reach Tennis Semi-Finals

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Tall, lanky Hugh Hyde, number two man on last year's Freshman tennis team, finally met his waterloo in the University tournament as he bowed to pint-sized Jim Jenkins in a straight set match played yesterday on the Divinity Field courts.

Jenkins, seeded number three in this year's tourney, capitalized on his opponent's errors to win both sets by a score of 6-3. Hyde, who uses his extra height to advantage on the court with a deadly overhead game, could not cope with the extremely steady game and greater experience of his opponent.

He had previously come up with a surprising win over Bart Harvey, runner-up in last year's affair. Jenkins is now in the semi-final round.

Wilson Beats Straus

Orme Wilson, in the fourth seeded spot, also reached the semi-finals yesterday as he snuffed out a gallant bid for an upset by Barney Straus. Wilson, this year's tennis captain, won the three set contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

One of the longest matches of the tournament was finally terminated yesterday in one set when Russ Ellis defeated Bob Boochever, a star on Cornell's net team last year, six games to one. Two days previously, they fought to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-6 draw until the match was postponed on account of darkness, with the third set to be played at another date.

In the Yardling tournament, Bud Collinson, a bright light on last year's Newton High team, defeated Jim Peabody in a quarter final match in another match played yesterday at Divinity Field.
