Mel Gordon, 145 pound Senior wingback from Brookline, received the Harlow stamp of approval Saturday afternoon in the form of a red jersey. For Gordon, the promotion represents success in a three-year fight for Varsity recognition which has carried him along the long road of House and Jayvee football.
Gordon's speed has earned him the red squad rating, and he will probably see considerable service as a spot runner. Gordon's promotion was the only one at the end of a long scrimmage on Saturday morning which was termed by Harlow as "satisfactory." Dick Pfister and Burgy Ayres are progressing as rapidly as can be expected at their new positions, blocking back and right tackle respectively.
The college year opens officially today so double practice sessions are a thing of the past, but Harlow does not intend to ease up on the scrimmages until the personnel of his first and second teams is more definitely settled. There are still about a dozen places open on the red squad, rounding it out to a total of 33 or 34.
On October 5 Amherst comes to Cambridge to raise the curtain on the Crimson season. The Lord Jeffs are rated much weaker than they were a year ago but still qualify as above par opening day opposition.
