80 SOCCER MEN EXPECTED

Harvard's soccer season for both Freshmen and Varsity will begin on Monday, September 23, when candidates will sign up at Dillon Field House at 3 o'clock. Last year about 80 Freshmen reported for practice, and a similar number will probably report to James McDonald, Freshman coach.

The Varsity, under the intclage of Coach Jack Carr, will have as its nucleus 13 Juniors and Seniors, six of whom started against Yale last year. In addition, 28 Freshmen last year won numerals, and many of them are expected to try out for the Varsity this year.

Last year the Varsity, captained by Howie Mendel, won five games and lost three, and brought its season to a close with a 2 to 1 victory over Yale. Mendel scored against Yale in all of his three years as a Varsity member, a feat which has never been surpassed.

13 Upperclassmen

The thirteen Varsity members are: Benjamin A. Barnes '41, William Edgar, Jr. '41, George H. Hanford '41, Captain David O. Ives '41, Henry R. Murphy '42, Morton Myerson '42, Arthur G. Neff, Jr. '42, Roger B. Oresman '41, John G. Penson '42, Daniel S. Porr '42, Ernest C. Staber '42, Llewellyn Vorley '41, and Joseph P. Willetts '41.

In last year's Yale game Edgar started at center forward, Ives at right halfback, Murphy at right inside, Oresman at left fullback, Penson in the goal, and Vorley at left inside.

With the defeat of Yale by a score of 1 to 0, the Freshmen last year concluded an even more successful season than the Varsity. Captained by "Cal" Calhoun, the team won seven, tied one, and lost two.

Soccer practice is held on the large field behind the Business School and opposite the Stadium. The Varsity and Freshman squads practice simultaneously each afternoon at three o'clock.

Freshmen who elect soccer as their fall sport are required to report three times a week, but may attend practice every day. In order to give all members of the squad a chance to prove their worth, there will be no cuts on the squad. To give all Freshmen the opportunity to play competively, the system inaugurated last year of dividing the players into teams, thus forming an intramural league, will be continued again this year.
