President Conant will speak at a luncheon of the Jewish War Veterans in New York City at noon today when he will accepted a citation from the veteraus for his "courageous devotion to the cause of humanity and intellectual "freedom."
An active member of the Committee to Defend America by Alding the Allies, President Conant is expected to talk about the war. In a letter released yesterday acknowledging the award of the Jewish War Veterans, President Consut said: "Whoever is president of the oldest College in this republic,-an institution of higher learning with a long tradition of tolerance and individual freedom,-must by virtue of his office be a spokesman for these principles, which are today jeopardized throughout the world.
"This honor means the more to me because it comes from an organization of war veterans. The records of your members prove more potently than any words a belief that there are certain principles for which men are willing to fight, and, if occasion demands, give their lives."
The citation which will be formally presented to President Conant today has been awarded "because he has been a most persuasive exponent of the principles and practices of tolerance and good will. By his courageous devotion to the cause of humanity and intellectual freedom, he has given leadership to the citizens of the United States and to the heads of institutions of learning.
"His adherence to these principles for which Harvard College has long stood, merits the approbation of free men," the citation reads.
