Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Today the Student Council is making the next logical step in its work of improving the Dining Halls' service. The poll which it is taking will determine undergraduate sentiment, pro and con, on the desirability of having student waiters in the Houses. It was seen from the first that no dogmatic statement could be made on the subject until the student body was polled. There are too many intangibles to make a hard-and-fast policy otherwise. Student waiting will afford many jobs for those who need them, and may reduce the board rate appreciably. But again, it may be prejudicial to the democracy that the House Plan is meant to foster. It may be putting too many student into routine, time-consuming jobs that will not repay the energy spent in them. The possibility that NYA aid, if accepted by the University, could offer better jobs must also be considered.
All these questions can only be answered by an appeal to those directly involved, the students. The plan of the Council, to try out student waiting in one House next year, will have to depend directly upon the results of this poll. Since this is an important phase of the drive to bring greater efficiency to the Dining Halls, everyone concerned should take time out from the reading period long enough to consider the problem seriously.
