High Winds, Illness Disrupt Progress of Yardling Eight

Kauffman Replaces Parkman at Four for Saturday's Race With M.I.T. and B.U.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

An epidemic of colds and bad weather has prevented the first Freshman boat from smoothing out all the rough spots in the past week, with the result that an inexperienced boat will take the water against M. I. T. and B. U. in the Rowe Cup regatta Saturday.

Andy Kauffman has recently taken over the number four seat from Harry Parkman, who is out because of illness, and Andy seems slated to row Saturday.

As the crew went out yesterday no other change has been made, but Bus Curwen, John Richardson, and Kirk Cornwell have returned after several days layoff, and the problem facing Coach Harvey Love is to get the boat running again in spite of all the interruptions. The boat now is just about where it was last week in smoothness and drive.

Tech Boat a Threat

The Tech eight, on the other hand, is lighter but has had more practice, and, as they look on the river, ought to provide plenty of opposition for the Yardling crew. Harvey Love is confident that the boat will go well once the boys get the proper mileage and water conditions, but up to now the pent up strength has been as much of a hindrance as an asset. "I am pleased with the results of the time trial Tuesday when the first beat the second by a good three lengths and was going better than it had for a week," Harvey commented.

150 lb. Race Thursday

The 150-lb eight does not have the immediate pressure of a race Saturday, since it opens its season against M. I. T. next Thursday in a dual contest, but again high winds this week have limited the necessary mileage. Johnny Abbot's boat is certainly still the starting crew and unless something goes wrong will continue to hold that position.

Coach Bert Haines, who has not yet seen either boat maintain a high stroke for more than a few minutes, is waiting for the results of this week's time trials before definitely deciding the lineup for Thursday's race.
