SNOWSTORM OPENS SKIING AS TEAM PRACTICES X-COUNTRY

"This snow storm is the luckiest break we could have," exclaimed Harvard's new ski coach, Bill Halsey, first year Architectural School student and graduate of Dartmouth last spring, in an interview in the locker room after yesterday's first cross-country practice. "I'm pleased and surprised at today's turnout; we'll have a fighting chance against Dartmouth this winter, but we have to work on the cross-country and jumping."

About a dozen hardy looking schuss-men showed up for the first practice of the season with their long slender cross-country boards carefully waxed with Skare for the occasion, but the captain, Del Ames '42 was detained in the north woods by good snow conditions, and last year's captain, Tom Winship '42, got bogged down in a Boston ski shop.

Manager Bill Wigglesworth expressed disappointment that neither of the "big men" were there. "It's going to be a heavy season," he said, "and I'm going to be run ragged, I can tell already."

First Election Returns

The Ski Club, whose main functions are to run the Ski Chalet in Pinkham Notch and supply material for the team, is electing officers for the season by postcard ballot. Latest returns according to Bill Wigglesworth show Tom Winship without any competition for the presidency and 17 votes on the state.

For Chairman of the Cabin committee, Jock Crawford '42 has 15 votes and his nearest competitor, Bill Thurston, has three. Roger Wilson '43, Dave Goldthwait '43, and Paul Sheeline '43 are close for the position of secretary with six, five, and four votes respectively. For Treasurer, Paul Sheeline leads Roger Wilson and Dave Goldthwait with five votes to their four. The final results will be announced at the open meeting next Wednesday.

Halsey Integrates Team

Halsey feels that in the past Harvard has had plenty of ability out on the boards, but that more stress should have been laid on strict training. This is especially true in the cross-country event where endurance is all important. That is why the first snow storm found the boys sprinting up and down the Charles River embankment.

It is true also that a man should not be allowed to race on the big Kanone ski trails unless he is really in shape. Lack of proper conditioning is the main cause of accidents. This is one of the big responsibilities of a coach.

Jumpers Need Practice

After the graduation of Dick Whitte-more last spring the Crimson team lacks a really accomplished jumper. Bill is taking the boys out to a nearby jump this Sunday to see how they look. Del Ames, Roger Wilson, Jock Crawford, and Tom Winship are promising material.

Last night Bill Halsey enumerated the best skiers at Dartmouth this year. "They're all mighty good, especially Charlie MacLane and they have a well balanced team, but we have the material and there's no reason why we can't show them a few tricks. I'll be very disappointed if we do worse than third in the Dartmouth Carnival. We'll have more than one team, and any man who comes out and does steady training will get a chance to race somewhere."
