Big Turnout at First '44 Debate Meeting

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The largest turnout in recent years greeted the first meeting of the Freshman Debating Council which was held last night in the Harvard Union with almost 100 Yardlings attending.

Robert W. Gillettee '44, acting chairman of the Council, described a new plan whereby the Debating Society will work in conjunction with the Foreign Affairs Discussions Group. Before each debate, a general discussion of the topic involved will be carried on by the discussion group so that the amount of material available for use in the debate will be increased.

The first debate will be held on December 6 with Milton. The topic of this debate will be announced soon, and tryouts for those wishing to debate will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7 o'clock in the Union. The tryouts will consist of five minutes speeches on the subject of the debate, and will be judged by members of the Varsity Debating Council.
