MOST YARDLINGS PICK SWIMMING

Swimming, Tennis, Crew, Are Chosen Most Popular Freshman Sports

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Once again the Yardlings elected swimming, tennis, and crew, respectively, their favorite fall sports by an over-whelming margin, according to official figures released yesterday.

Altogether, the Big Three were favored by 63 per cent of the Freshmen. Out of the 961 members of the class, 224, or 23 per cent, chose swimming; 203, or 21 per cent, voted for tennis, while crew took care of 186, or 19 per cent. These figures are practically identical with those of last year, when 23 per cent favored swimming, 20 per cent tennis, and 23 per cent crew.

Football, Soccer Gain

Football, singles, soccer, and track, in that order, were next in popularity. This represents a decline for soccer, which took fourth place last year, and a corresponding gain for football, which previously trailed the booters.

Probably the most startling change, however, is the jump of singles from ninth to fifth place. Last year, singles claimed less than two per cent; now it is favored by seven and a half per cent, or 71 men.

At the end of the list come fencing, cross country, miscellaneous exercise, gymnasium, and managing, respectively. This represents little change from last year, except that tumbling and lacrosse, which were offered last fall, are no longer recognized, and the men who would be in these activities are distributed among other minor sports.
