Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Competition gets under way in two House football leagues this week with four touch and four tackle contests scheduled on the gridirons immediately north of the Soldiers Field tennis courts.
In the touch opener this afternoon at 3:15 o'clock, Eliot House meets Adams, prying the lid off a season that will run until November 15, followed by a climax game in which the first place winners travel to New Haven to meet the Yale champions. Other touch games this week include Dudley vs. Winthrop tomorrow, Lowell vs. Dunster on Wednesday and Leverett vs. Kirkland on Thursday.
Adams House Stronger
A rejuvenated Adams House team engages a weakened Lowell House eleven on Wednesday afternoon in what should prove to be a closely contested opener for the House Tackle Football League. Dudley and Eliot make their seasonal debut on the same afternoon with Dudley favored over the Elephants.
The other House teams will see their first action on the next day with Winthrop scheduled to face Leverett and Dunster meeting Kirkland. The tackle season continues through November 14 with games every Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30 o'clock.
Probably the most improved team in the tackle league will be the Gold Coast outfit which has been given new life by the addition of Bobby James and Tom Lacey, two former Varsity gridders. Wally Chessman, captain and center, Phil Nagle, tackle, and Jean Gordon, back, are among the veterans returning from last year's eleven which tied with Eliot for last place in the league.
Dunster Weakened
Weakened by the loss of four or five regulars of the 1939 campaign, and hampered by a poor turnout so far this year, Dunster's gridders look forward to an unimpressive season. Last year's third place winners will depend largely on George Varn, all-House back, Bill McGinniss, end, and Tom Eliot and Hal Smith, tackles.
Kirkland House, which lost its star back, Roy Moore, and a good share of its line through graduation, nevertheless hopes to pull through this year by pinning its aspirations on the strength of numbers. Chuck Griffith and Jack Addington are the mainstays of the Deacon backfield.
Lowell House will rely on veterans Bill Murphy, Elmer Taylor and Dean Morse, while Leverett's eleven, which lost its quarterback, Wily Willy Tyng, will lean heavily on tackles Dave Kemper and Bill Healey.
