Four untested sophomores hold the key to the success or failure of Coach Jack Carr's 1940 soccer squad which opens a nine-game schedule with Tufts this afternoon at 1 o'clock on the Business School Field.
Built around a nucleus of seven returning lettermen from last year's eleven which placed third in New England Intercollegiate League competition, the squad will boast a strong half-back line including Captain Dave Ives at right-half and senior Bill Edger at center-half. Jack Penson, a junior, will be the starting goalie.
Willetts at Right Outside
Out of the five men in the forward line, three were letter winners last season, Prenny Willetts, hockey captain, and Henry Murphy, another junior, hold down the right outside and right inside posts and Lou Vorley returns to the left inside spot. Roger Oresman, the other starting letterman will fill one of two fullback posts.
The forward line, which has showed little scoring punch in practice thus for will include two sophomores, Buzz Sawhill at the center spot and Monroe Herskovitz at left outside. Anson McCook, another second year man, will alternate with letterman, Mort Myerson, at left-half.
