There are many ways in which an incoming Freshman can earn at least part of his expenses at Harvard, according to the Student Employment Office which is in charge of distributing jobs to those who need them.
Students who hope to earn their way through college are warned that they should not expect to earn more than three hundred dollars a year; outside of scholarships and prizes the average earning of three hundred dollars can be received either in kind--room and board--or in cash, depending on the type of work.
The most numerous positions open to Freshmen exclusively are the jobs as waiters in the Freshman Union. These are given to approximately forty deserving students each year who have made application. The waiters receive twen- ty-one meals a weak in exchange for approximately twenty hours, of work a week.
The University also has position for which they hire undergraduates. Among the jobs available to Freshmen are! parking lot attendants, proctors and monitors, library attendants, field-workers and checkers on the athletic fields, and typists.
All of these positions vary in the type of work and the amount that can be earned during the academic year, but the Student Employment Office has established a minimum rate of fifty cents an hour for about ten hours of work a week
