"Western culture must be carried-on by America after the next war," Bertrand Russell, world-renowned author and philosopher, said when interviewed last night. Russell, who addressed the Ford Hall Forum yesterday, predicted that the toll of another world war would be so great that "Europe will no longer count in civilization."
"A world war this year is not inevitable, but very, very probable. However, the situation is better since President Roosevelt's speech yesterday. His warning proves to the dictators that he will be as unneutral as he can manage. Only fear of America can prevent a great war this year.
War Will Destroy 'Social Fabric'
"America will probably emerge as dictator of the world after a war, especially if she remains neutral. Even if she comes in, her position will have her. She is not exposed to air-raids. Most Americans don't realize what a war in Europe will mean. It will destroy our whole social fabric."
Russell was inclined to doubt the effect of Italy in any future war. "Mussolini," he said, "is a very shrewd fellow. He will certainly be on the winning side. I shall be very much disappointed if he comes in against us."
Sees Three American Courses
The British philosopher stated that there are there courses open to America today. She can state her neutrality, and stay out of the next war; or state her neutrality and enter the war--although this is unlikely now. "However," he said, "more good will be done by making it appear that she actually will come in."
Considered an authority on communism and fascism, Russell declared that there is "no danger whatever from communism in America, Fascism, however, may come from the big-business interests."
