Varsity Fencing Team Highly Favored To Overcome Yale in Season's Finale

With the best team in recent years, Coach Rene Peroy will pit his fencers against Yale at New Haven this afternoon in their final match of the season. Led by Captain Skip Batchelder, the swordsmen have dropped only one dual meet so far this year and stand a good chance of winding up the season with an easy conquest of Yale.

Trailing Army and Navy, the fencing team nevertheless came out ahead of Yale and Princeton in the Annual Pentagonal Meet at Annapolis March 4. The Varsity's only defeat this year was at the hands of Seton Hall by the narrow margin of 14-13.

Besides the Varsity, the Crimson Jayvee and Freshman fencers will also battle with the Elis today. The Junior Varsities have an even chance of coming out on the long end of the scoring, but the Eli Cubs are heavily favored over the Yardlings.

Mentor Peroy was highly optimistic over today's prospects before he left for New Haven with the team yesterday. "We've got one of the best teams in many years," he said enthusiastically, "with all of last year's team back. But unfortunately the '42 squad is the poorest in ten years."

Among the many victories the Varsity has chalked up during the season are defeats of Brown, Columbia, Hartford Fencers Club, M. I. T., and St. John's.

Fighting with Captain Batchelder in the sabre division today will be Joe Doyle and Tom Wright, assisted by Art Jaros, Cranston Jones, and Al Labastic in the foils. Holding down the epee positions are Bill Coach, Ames Murphy, and Hal Park.
