Although they played a brand of soccer that can only be characterized as sloppy, the Crimson booters edged Tufts' Jumbos yesterday afternoon on the Business School field by a 2-1 count.
The score contrasts miserably with the 5-0 total run up by last year's championship squad against the same team, and Coach Jack Carr was far from satisfied with his team's showing. In an attempt to bolster up its ailing offense, he made a number of personnel changes in the course of the game so that there was no static lineup, especially in the forward line.
Henry Murphy, captain of the Yardling team last year, made his first start of the year yesterday and celebrated the event by making the first goal of the game, a goal that did not come before the third period and was a rather muddy one. Murphy had to kick the ball out of the arms of the Jumbo goalie in order to make the score.
Jimmy Rousmaniere accounted for the second tally early in the last period, taking a corner kick from Captain Howie Mendel. Kelly scored the Tufts goal half way through the fourth quarter when Jack Penson got caught outside of his goal.
The Yardlings were held to a 1-1 tie by a fairly weak Andover eleven. The Freshmen, led by Cal Calhoun, who scored their one goal, outplayed their opponents throughout the game and showed signs of potential talent.
